The President of the Republic noted that the Estonian-Finnish relations have traditionally been intensive and close, and that it is important to continue our successful cooperation both in bilateral as well as in multilateral relations. "Our common activities as Baltic Sea countries help guarantee stability, sustainable development and security for the whole region. Our region has an important role in Europe and has a big development potential, which has to be utilised. This is an understanding shared by both countries, and this is what has brought our peoples closer together," the Head of State said.

President Rüütel stressed that he attaches great importance to Estonian-Finnish joint efforts in expanding the zone of democracy to the neighbourhood of the EU external borders. "We have participated in working out the new neighbourhood initiative, and we are participating in the further elaboration and realisation of that initiative. We both have accumulated plenty of contacts with our eastern neighbours and that experience is worth to be taken into account by the entire European Union," the President of the Republic said.

According to Ambassador Kalela, the Estonian-Finnish relations are closer than ever before and there is a lot in common between the two countries, starting with our geographical location and ending with linguistic kinship. The Finnish Ambassador considered that the best proof of the closeness between Estonia and Finland are the common people and the fact that every day thousands of people cross the Gulf of Finland in order to get acquainted with cultural values, to visit friends and to work.
