The President of the Republic handed over the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana to George Bush

President Arnold Rüütel handed over the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana to George BushThe President of the Republic visited on Thursday, September 15, the Estonian Permanent Representation to the United Nations and the Estonian Consulate General in New York where he handed over to the former President of the United States of America, George H.W. Bush, the 1st Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana. To mark the occasion, Ambassador to the United States of America, Jüri Luik, held a reception at the Consulate General.

President Rüütel, handing over the Order to President Bush, reminisced about the contacts they had in 1991 and in 1992. The President of the Republic thanked the United States of America for not recognising the Soviet occupation in Estonia, and for the support and encouragement given to Estonia during its restoration of independence. In the words of President Rüütel, the support of the United States gave Estonia self-confidence and encouragement to achieve its goals.

Giving recognition to Estonia's aspirations of freedom and what had been done for restoring independence, President Bush expressed his warm thanks for the high award. Admiring the beauty of the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, the 41st president of the United States of America, George Bush, promised to bear it with dignity.
