The President of the Republic signed a convention on the prevention of nuclear terrorism

President Arnold Rüütel signed a convention on the prevention of nuclear terrorismPresident Arnold Rüütel participated on Wednesday, September 14, in the opening of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly and signed the Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.

On Tuesday, September 13, the head of Estonian state participated in a reception hosted by the President of the United States of America George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush, and in a festive dinner hosted by the President of the 59th Session, the President of the Gabonese Republic El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba and his wife in honour of the high-level guests of the UN General Assembly.

On Wednesday, President Rüütel participated in the opening of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly, and in a meeting on the topic "Financing for Development". The head of Estonian state also attended a session of the UN Security Council, which was held on the level of heads of state, and after that participated in an official luncheon hosted by the Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Following an official group photo of heads of state and government, the President of the Republic signed on behalf of Estonia the Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.

The aim of the Convention is to suppress the acts of nuclear terrorism, and to strengthen international cooperation in prevention of terrorism and in the fight against terrorism. Joining with that document shows the readiness of Estonia to unconditionally condemn all acts, methods and practices of terrorism and regard them as criminal and unjustified. The Convention helps to strengthen cooperation between the states in order to prevent acts of nuclear terror and to work out measures for prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators of terrorist acts.

President Rüütel met with the President of Bulgaria, Georgi Parvanov in New York to discuss the further intensification of Estonian-Bulgarian cooperation. Possibilities for better introduction of Estonia's EU accession experience to Bulgaria were discussed at greater length.

After that, the head of Estonian state met with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin. That meeting addressed the intensification of Estonian-Moldovian cooperation, primarily, in political issues. Also, exchange of Estonia's experience with Moldova was discussed. Last June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Urmas Paet visited Moldova, and soon an official visit of the President of Moldova to Estonia will take place.

Wednesday night, the New York Estonian Educational Society held a reception in Estonian House in honour of the President of the Republic.

On Thursday, September 15, President Rüütel will participate in a debate held on the initiative of the Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Seymour Arthur on the topic of global concentration of resources for fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The debate is also a part of preparations for a Global Summit on AIDS scheduled to be held in 2006. In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will hand over the 1st class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana to the former President of the United States of America George H.W. Bush. The same day, in the afternoon, the head of Estonian state will deliver a speech at the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly. Ambassador to the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Estonia to the UN Tiina Intelmann will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic.

The aim of the current World Summit, which is held within the framework of the UN General Assembly, is to review the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals adopted at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, and the assessment of progress achieved in fulfilling the goals adopted at the UN Conferences. The Summit is also aimed at adopting decisions on the UN reforms in order to help the UN, an international organisation with the biggest membership, to cope with its new challenges and new threats.

The President of the Republic will leave New York on Friday and will arrive in Estonia on Saturday, September 17.
