President Arnold Rüütel received Estonian athletes who had distinguished themselves through good performance in sports in 2005President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received Estonian athletes who had distinguished themselves through good performance in sports in 2005.

President Rüütel thanked the athletes for their endurance, courage and strength of purpose, and noted that the current athletic year has been miraculous. The President of the Republic reminisced that in eight months Estonian athletes had won 83 medals at World and European Championships, Universiades, which can be taken as Olympic Games of Students, and at Youth Olympic Days. "You have set a good example for thousands of boys and girls who being inspired by your success will go in for sports. You have introduced Estonia to the world and brought glory to your nation," the Head of State said.

The President of the Republic also expressed gratitude to the coaches whose commitment, knowledge, experience and wisdom had helped our athletes to realise their dreams and whose care, attention and friendly advice had supported the athletes also outside of their sporting activities.

The Head of State wished that besides competitive sports, which is a calling and mission of athletes, we should not forget or underestimate people's sports and sport for fitness, the results and level of which do not give any reason to be content with. "I would like to see that in your presentations and when meeting with people you would call upon people to be more active in their life, to exercise and go in for sports. If your very tight timetable allows it, take part in people's sports events, as the significance of your personal example and attitude for boosting exercising as a hobby is priceless," President Rüütel emphasised.

The Head of State handed over to the medallists and their coaches presents and wished them reaching their high goals also at championships in the future.
