The President of the Republic continues the state visit in Istanbul

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today continued the state visit to the Republic of Turkey arriving in Istanbul from Ankara.

The President of the Republic gave several longer interviews to Turkish main TV channels and participated in a Turkish-Estonian business seminar at Hotel Conrad. Opening the seminar, President Rüütel said that Turkey with its big and rapidly developing market was a partner with whom Estonia wished to broaden and deepen economic cooperation.

At the business seminar, Toomas Luman, President of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry made an overview of the business environment in Estonia. Oktay Varlier, a member of the Board of Directors of the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) gave an overview of the activities of DEIK and development of Turkish economy, and presented an analysis of trade relations with Estonia.

In the afternoon, the head of Estonian state visited Dolmabahēe Palace - a former residence of Turkish sultans and also of Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. In the evening, Governor of Istanbul Muammer Güler and Mrs. Güler hosted a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel. Among other topics discussed at that meeting was also the organisation of internal security in urban environment.

Within the framework of her special programme, Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today visited Atatürk Cultural Centre where she listened to a concert of a local folk music ensemble, and met with Bayram Bilge Tokel, Director of General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey.

Tomorrow, the last day of the state visit, the President of the Republic will meet with Turkish businessmen, and with Honorary Consul Tuncay Özilhan, and will visit the Great Church of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and also Isuzu Bus Manufacturing Plant. The Head of State will arrive in Estonia late on Thursday night.
