The President of the Republic met with the President of the EU Committee of the Regions

President Arnold Rüütel met with Peter Straub, President of the EU Committee of the RegionsPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Peter Straub, President of the EU Committee of the Regions.

At the meeting, the President of the Republic gave an overview of the main development trends of local governments in Estonia and their current problems. According to the assessment given by the Head of State the local governments have long traditions, and have extensive rights and obligations today, but do not always have necessary resources to exercise them.

The meeting also addressed the further enlargement of the European Union and the regional development in that context. Peter Straub was also interested in he activities of the President's Roundtable of Local Governments and Regional Development, and its experience to involve the local governments into decision making process. In the course of his visit, Peter Straub will also meet with the members of the Roundtable.

EU Committee of the Regions (www.cor.eu.int) is a consultative organ, consisting of representatives of different regions and local authorities. This guarantees that those bodies can take part in working out the EU policies and that local peculiarities and priorities would be respected. The Committee has to be consulted on regional and local issues, such as issues concerning regional policy, environment, education and transport.
