PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to leave for a state visit to the Republic of Turkey

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will leave in the early hours of Tuesday morning, September 6, for a state visit to the Republic of Turkey.

During the visit, Estonian-Turkish bilateral political, economic and cultural relations, defence related cooperation, as well as the commencement of the EU accession negotiations with Turkey will be discussed

On Tuesday, September 6, President Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will meet with President of the Republic of Turkey Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Mrs. Sezer. President Rüütel will lay a wreath at Atatürk's Memorial Tomb. Afterwards, a tźte-ą-tźte meeting of the presidents and a meeting with delegations will be held at the Presidential Palace. At the meeting, the Cooperation Programme Between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Republic of Estonia in the fields of Culture, Education, Science, Youth And Sports will be signed. Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel, within the framework of her special programme, will visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilization.

In the afternoon, President Rüütel will visit Atakule Observation Tower, and will attend the opening ceremony of the building of the Estonian Embassy in Ankara. After that, the head of Estonian state will meet with Vice Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Sadõk Yakut, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdošan.

The President of the Republic of Turkey Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Mrs. Sezer will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.

On the second day of the visit, the state visit of President Rüütel to Turkey will continue in Istanbul where the head of Estonian state will open an Estonian-Turkish business conference, and will acquaint himself with local sites of interest, visiting among other places also Dolmabahce Palace.

Governor of Istanbul Muammer Güler and Mrs. Güler will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.

On Thursday, September 8, in the morning the President of the republic will meet with Turkish entrepreneurs. After that, the head of Estonian state and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will visit the Blue Mosque and Istanbul Carpet Gallery. In the afternoon, the presidential couple will acquaint themselves with the Great Church of Hagia Sophia, and will visit John Hopkins Hospital in Turkey, and Arcelik, a household appliances company. After that, there will be a tour to the Topkap Palace and a boat ride on the Bosporus.

The official delegation accompanying the President of the Republic will include among others Ambassador of Estonia to the Republic of Turkey Märt Volmer, Chief of the Estonian Defence Forces Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, Minister of Regional Affairs Jaan Õunapuu, State Secretary Heiki Loot, Vice Governor of Eesti Pank Andres Sutt, member of the Riigikogu Maret Maripuu, Acting Governor of Saare County Hans Teiv, and Rector of Estonian Business School Madis Habakuk. The Head of State will be accompanied also by a twelve-member business delegation headed by Toomas Luman, President of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The President of the Republic will arrive back to Estonia from the state visit late in the evening of Thursday, September 8.
