The President of the Republic visited Xian

President Arnold Rüütel visited yesterday and today during his state visit Xian, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, which is the internationally known centre of Chinese culture and history.

On Saturday the President of the Republic of Estonia visited the Museum of Emperor Qin Shihuang Terracotta Warriors near Xian. The museum exhibits hundreds of figures of warriors and horses dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), which were found during the archaeological excavations thirty years ago and which are often praised to be the eighth major miracle of the world.

Afterwards the Estonian head of the state met with the Mayor of Xian Li Hue Mei. During the meeting the Mayor gave a survey of the history of Xian and the contemporary economic life in Shaanxi Province. The President of the Republic of Estonia spoke about the major successes achieved in Estonia during the period after the restoration of her independence and various opportunities for tightening the economic ties between Estonia and China.

On Sunday the President of the Republic of Estonia visited the very rich and unique exposition of the Xian History Museum. This museum covers the period since 200 000 years ago till the modern times through all the Chinese dynasties, many of which had their capital in Xian. Afterwards President Rüütel visited the Buddhist monastery complex located in Xian, the main attraction of which is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda - a holy place built by Emperor Gaozong in 652.
