The President of the Republic visited Shanghai

Today President Arnold Rüütel started his state visit in the People's Republic of China, visiting Shanghai.

First, the head of the state paid a visit to the Wai Gao Qiao Port. The container port located at the estuary of the Yangtse River is one of the biggest in the world and is still growing fast. The President of the Republic of Estonia visited also the research and development centre of Zhong Xing Telecom (ZTE) - the biggest producer of telecommunication equipment in China. Afterwards President Rüütel visited the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. This is the highest TV tower in Asia (468 m). From its 263-m-high sighseeing floor one can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole city of Shanghai, the population of which is 14 million.

In the afternoon the President of the Republic of Estonia opened the Estonia-China Business Forum at the Jin Jiang Hotel Coference Centre. In his speech President Rüütel focused on the fields of economic cooperation between two states, which possess the highest development potential, introducing Estonia as one of the Baltic Sea transit and logistics hubs. The President of the Republic of Estonia also pointed out good prospects for the cooperation between the states in the field of biotechnology and ICT.

Among other speakers at the business seminar there were Edgar Savisaar, Minister of Economy and Communications, as well as businessmen Tiit Vähi and Indrek Neivelt.

Afterwards the President of the Republic of Estonia visited the Shanghai Museum and the displays of its Galleries of Ancient Chinese Bronze and Ancient Chinese Ceramics.

In the evening the Estonian head of the state met with Han Zheng, Mayor of the City of Shanghai, who expressed his hope that the present state visit would enable to intensify considerably the contacts of Shanghai businessmen with Estonia.

Tomorrow President Rüütel will continue his visit in Beijing, where he will meet Chinese leaders.
