PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic goes on a state visit to the People's Republic of China

President Arnold Rüütel goes on a state visit to the People's Republic of China on Tuesday, August 23, 2005.

During the visit bilateral political, economic and cultural relations between Estonia and China as well as the relations between the European Union and China will be discussed.

On Wednesday, August 24, the President of the Republic of Estonia will arrive in Shanghai, where he visits the Shanghai Wai Gao Qiao Port, the Zhong Xing Telecom Centre and the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Afterwards President Rüütel will open the Estonia-China Business Seminar at the New Jin Jiang Hotel. In the afternoon the Estonian head of the state will visit the Shanghai City Planning and Urban Development Expo pavilion and in the afternoon there will be a meeting with Han Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai.

During the second day of the visit the state visit of President Rüütel to China will continue in Beijing, where there will be meetings with the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China Wen Jiabao and the President of the People's Republic of China Hu Jintao.

President Hu Jintao will give a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Estonia.

On Friday morning, August 26, President Rüütel will have a tour of the Great Wall of China. In the afternoon the Estonian head of the state will meet Wu Bangguo, National People's Congress (Parliament) Chairman.

On Saturday, August 27, President Rüütel will go to Xian, where he will visit Emperor Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Warriors Museum. In the evening there will be a meeting with Li Hue Mei, the Mayor of Xian.

On Sunday, August 28, the visit will be continued with the visit to the Xian History Museum. Later on the President of the Republic of Estonia will visit the holy place for Buddhists - Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong. In the afternoon the Estonian head of the state will return to Beijing, where he will open an exhibition of the Estonian painter Valli Lember-Bogatkina in the Jin Tai Art Museum.
On the last day of the visit the President of the Republic of Estonia will deliver a speech as a guest of honour at the opening of the World Women's Congress "Towards Gender Equality and Common Development". Later on a presentation of Mobile Telecom 3G mobile phones will take place in Beijing. In the afternoon President Rüütel will visit Forbidden City and get acquainted with the activities of the technology company Qing Hua Tong Fang.

In the evening there will be a reception given by the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the People's Republic of China Mait Martinson in honour of the President of the Republic of Estonia.

In the official delegation accompanying the Estonian head of the state there are, among others, the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the People's Republic of China Mait Martinson, Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar, Minister of Interior Affairs Kalle Laanet, Minister of Agriculture Ester Tuiksoo, State Secretary Heiki Loot, Chairman of the Riigikogu Committee on Foreign Affairs Enn Eesmaa, Director General of the Citizenship and Migration Board Mari Pedak, President of the Estonian Olympic Committee Mart Siimann, Governor of Lääne County Sulev Vare and Rector of the Estonian Academy of Music Peep Lassmann. The head of the state will be accompanied also by a 36-person business delegation headed by Juhan Kolk, member of the Board of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The President of the Republic of Estonia will return from the state visit and be back in Estonia late in the evening of Tuesday, August 30.
