20.08.2005

President Arnold Rüütel unveiled a memorial stone to the defenders of the TV TowerPresident Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today attended the unveiling ceremony of a memorial stone at the television tower.

In his speech, the President of the Republic said that August 20, 1991 and the days preceding and following that date had a decisive significance for the history of Estonia.

The President of the Republic gave recognition to Uno Kaseväli, Jüri Joost, Jaanus Kokk and Peeter Milli - the men who were defending the upper floors of the TV Tower against attackers that day.

"Certainly, also people of Estonia, who managed to fight for their independence avoiding violence and victims, have deserved a memorial. With good will, people went to meet even the vehicles of war, which were directed at them and managed to stop them. That day, our people demonstrated not only unanimity, but also magnanimity towards their opponents. I wish that also today the same features would tone our life, which is back again in peaceful track, and would serve the general public interest," the President of the Republic said.

After that, President Rüütel attended a meeting of the August 20 Club in the White Hall of the Toompea Castle, and participated in the presentation of the book of memories "Back to the future (August, 1991)" by Madis Salum.
