17.08.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today participated in the ceremony held in the Memorial Church to Estonian Soldiers at Tori where he handed over to the Land Forces the Army Flag. The Head of State hammered in the first nail into the staff of the flag, which was donated by the Estonian Reserve Officers Association.

In his address, the President of the Republic said that the personnel of the five years ago established Estonian land forces had done a remarkable job and had proved to be capable of development. "The land forces have become one of the main pillars in the military defence of Estonia," President Rüütel noted. "The land forces have also borne the biggest burden of preparing for international missions and participating in them."

The Head of State said that what concerns combat skills, personality features as well as courage and stamina, the soldiers of land forces have deserved from the allies very positive and sometimes even laudatory assessment. "Certainly, the achievements of the Army in the NATO integration process, as well as the creation of the 1st Infantry Brigade deserve recognition," President Rüütel said.

The President of the Republic recognized the contribution of the Estonian Reserve Officers Association to the development of national defence and to the strengthening of nationhood, and said that giving the flag to the Army he was confident that the entire personnel of the Army, from privets to the Commander of the Army, are ready to hold the Army Flag in honour.
