The President of the Republic participated in the cornerstone ceremony of the Saaremaa Deep Sea Port

President Arnold Rüütel participated in the cornerstone ceremony of the Saaremaa Deep Sea PortPresident Arnold Rüütel today visited the site of the future Saaremaa Deep Sea Port in Mustjala rural municipality, and participated in the corner stone ceremony of the port.

In his greeting address, President Rüütel recalled long standing seafaring traditions of the islanders and also century's long experience of building ports. In the words of President Rüütel, for the development of Saaremaa, but also in the context of Estonia as a whole, the Saaremaa Deep Sea Port has economic, social as well as cultural significance.

Also Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar, Acting Governor of Saare County Hans Teiv, and Acting Chairman of the Board of Tallinn Port Ain Kaljurand took the floor and together with the Head of State removed the cover from the stone bearing today's date. According to current plans, the construction of the Saaremaa Deep Sea Port, the future most westerly sea gate of Estonia, will be completed by May, 2006.
