The President of the Republic thanked departing ambassadors

President Arnold Rüütel received departing ambassadorsPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received departing ambassadors of five European countries and conferred on them the 1st Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana for their services to the Estonian state.

Jaakko Blomberg, the Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to Estonia in the years 2001-2005, Lįszló Nikicser, the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to Estonia in the years 2003-2005, Jųrgen Munk Rasmussen, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Estonia in the years 2000-2005, Joanna Maria Petronella Francisca van Vliet, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Estonia in the years 2001-2005, and Wojciech Wróblewski, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Estonia in the years 2001-2005 deserved the thanks of the President of the Republic.

In his address, the President of the Republic noted that the bilateral relations between Estonia and the countries represented by the Ambassadors had made a long step forward in recent years. "We know how much hard work and responsibility your mission requires, we know how to appreciate this, and our respect belongs to you," the Head of State said.

President Rüütel pointed out the importance of setting common near-future and longer perspective goals for the sake of security and wellbeing of Europe, on the bases of similar values. "The existing experience in interstate cooperation provides a good foundation for protecting the interests of states also in the renewed Europe. Today, when several question marks have come up on our path, and a time has come to consider what to do, it is very important to understand that the 21st century demands mental renewal from all of us," the President of the Republic said.

The Head of State thanked the Ambassadors for their assistance in Estonia's accession to the European Union and NATO, but also for their work of promoting their countries to Estonians "Thanks to your active work, there have been numerous mutual high-level visits and the cooperation between agencies has become closer. Also exchange of business delegations has become livelier. And maybe the most important is that the communication between people has intensified," President Rüütel added.

"With all my heart I hope that the years you have worked here were pleasant for you and the accomplished goals offered you satisfaction. You certainly have found friends here, and I believe that you come to visit Estonia again and again. Please remember that you will always be expected and welcome here," the President of the Republic said and wished everybody happiness and the best of success in their new challenges.

On behalf of the foreign diplomats who had been awarded the state decorations, Ambassador Rasmussen thanked the Head of State for the high recognition and said that the years spent in Estonia had been interesting and exiting, and had offered an opportunity to follow the transformation of the Estonian society. In the words of the Danish Ambassador, the fact that increasingly more attention was paid to social sphere would certainly facilitate the enhancement of wellbeing of people in Estonia.
