The President of the Republic met with County Governors
20.06.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg hosted a lunch for County Governors. At the working lunch the issues related to regional development, including development of infrastructure, construction and housing, and social problems were discussed.

President Rüütel expressed recognition to the work done by County Governors, and said: ''The county has the face of its Governor, it is very important that you could realise your ideas and facilitate the development of your region.''

According to County Governors, it is difficult to realise good ideas and plans of the county because of limited financial resources. The meeting brought out that the most essential investments needed for the development of the region could be best decided and agreed on the county level, and that the state should have more confidence in county governments and local authorities.

Possibilities to develop infrastructure and access to Internet were discussed at greater length. The President of the Republic said that in spite of very rapid development of Internet network in Estonia, not all regions had an equal access to Internet, and that situation needed to be improved. Better access to Internet would advance life in rural areas and would create more jobs.

Also issues related to the development of vocational education and regional development were touched upon at the meeting.
