The President of the Republic met with Ukrainian leaders

President Arnold Rüütel, being on a working visit to Ukraine in connection with a roundtable meeting organised by the World Economic Forum, today in Kiev met with the President of Ukraine, Victor Jushchenko, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn, and the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Julia Timoshenko.

The meetings took place in a cordial and businesslike atmosphere; Ukrainian leaders took a lively and thorough interest in Estonia's reform experience. President Rüütel introduced Estonia's currency reform, privatization process, reforming of tax system, and the process of preparation for the EU accession, including the harmonisation of legislation. Also the land reform was singled out, which is in its initial phase in Ukraine - land can be privatised, but not yet sold.

At the meeting with President Jushchenko, Estonia's experience in using modern information technology, including e-governance and electronic banking, was discussed at length.

At the meeting with the Speaker of Ukrainian Parliament, Volodymyr Lytvyn, political reforms in Ukraine were discussed, including the changes in the president's and the prime minister's area of responsibility. The possibilities for deepening the contacts between Estonia and Ukraine were also touched upon.

At the meeting over lunch with Prime Minister Timoshenko conditions necessary for business development in Estonia and Ukraine were discussed at large. The President of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Toomas Luman, gave an overview of the current situation of Estonian economy and business environment.

The President of the Republic today, together with President Jushchenko and Georgian President Saakashvili, visited a unique aviation exhibition at the Antonov Aviation Scientific Technical Complex near Kiev, where alongside with new military aircrafts also An-225, the world's biggest transport aircraft that is capable to lift cargoes with a weight of up to 250 tons, are displayed. The Head of State will arrive back from his working visit tonight.
