President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel attended the inauguration ceremony of Signe Kivi as Rector of the Estonian Academy of ArtsPresident Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today attended the inauguration ceremony of Signe Kivi as Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts.

In his greeting address, the President of the Republic expressed his respect to professor Signe Kivi for taking the responsibilities of the Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts.

The Head of state noted that 90 years of uninterrupted art education is a big achievement, worth to be proud of, for a small nation, and that we certainly would like to go on with it also in future. "Alongside with carrying on the traditions, the Academy would like to keep up with time," the President said. "At the same time, also the expectations of the society are growing. It is understandable that we see the creative work of the students and teachers of the Academy of Arts as an inseparable part of the development of our national culture and social thought."

President Rüütel said that the more freedom and independence the artists had, the more the society would win. "Because of the excessive flow of information that is characteristic of our time and the changes taking place in our system of values, it is not easy to achieve that, but the more valuable it would be," the Head of state stressed.

President Rüütel wished that under the leadership of the new rector the rapid development of the Academy would continue and its influence both in Estonia as well as in the European cultural space would increase.

The President of the Republic wished everybody success in their creative work and determination to shape the future of the nation through moulding social values.
