The President of the Republic opened the Premier Rural Fair

President Arnold Rüütel today opened Maamess 2005, the Premier Rural Fair in Estonia, at Tartu Fairs Center.

''Estonia belongs to the EU common economic space and European principles are again an inseparable part of our everyday life and work. There is no reason to doubt about our capability and willingness to follow those principles. Thanks to a free of customs restrictions liberal economic environment, Estonian rural economy has acquired experience and knowledge that helps us to cope in intense market rivalry,'' The President of the Republic said in his opening address.

President Rüütel noted that Estonia had, thanks to it natural, cultural and historical prerequisites, excellent possibilities to develop organic agriculture. According to the Head of State organic farming offers not only new perspective to small farms, it is a very important aspect of the promotion of healthy way of life and sustainable development.

Following the opening ceremony of the fair, President Rüütel made a tour of the fair.

This fair is a member of EURASCO and has been entered in the calendar of the most important agricultural fairs taking place in Europe. Nearly 200 companies take part in this international fair consisting of four sections - an Agricultural Fair, a Timber Processing and Forestry Fair, a Fair for Food and a Horticultural Fair.
