The President of the Republic sent a letter of congratulation to Vatican

President Arnold Rüütel today sent a letter of congratulation to Vatican to His Holiness Benedict XVI on the occasion of his being elected Pope.

The message of the congratulation runs: "Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of being elected Pope. I am convinced that during your time in office, the dialogue between different religions that values the diversity of societies and through that helps to change the world to be more tolerant and better will continue.

I am sure that your activity will provide a new impetus to guaranteeing security and peace and to the efforts to avoid war all over the world. I hope that you will be successful facilitating the enhancement of understanding between people and stability. I believe that you have a great opportunity to promote spiritual values and social justice all over the world.

On behalf of myself and the people of Estonia I wish success to your Pontificate and personally to you courage and stamina to fulfil your mission.

Please accept, Your Holiness, the assurance of my highest consideration."
