The President of the Republic met with the Minister of Finance

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Minister of Finance Aivar Sõerd who introduced the governing coalition's financial policy priorities to the Head of State.

Among the topics of the meeting was the concept of ecological tax reform that had been presented in the current coalition agreement. The Minister of Finance said that both the enterprises and citizens were ready to accept that. The President of the Republic said that he supported the forceful implementation of that reform, and also stressed the importance of more active use of alternative energy sources.

The Head of State and the Minister of Finance spoke also about the need to strengthen local governments. It was noted that the obligations and rights of local governments would have to be revised before further tasks were designated, and in connection with that the local government revenue base had to be strengthened. The Minister of Finance stressed that the maintaining of budgetary balance would certainly continue to be one of the principles pursued by the governing coalition.
