President Arnold Rüütel today visited Kilingi-Nõmme and declared April 18 - 24 Forest Week open.
President Rüütel thanked all foresters for their apprehension that the forest needed the care and understanding attitude of people. ''Forest has helped our forbearers to build their homes, gave them warm room and food on the table,'' the Head of State noted in his opening address.
In the course of the ceremony, which took place in the Flag Park, Räpina passed the flag of the Forest Capital to Kilingi-Nõmme. The occasion was perpetuated in the town's history by a pine tree planted by the Head of State in Central Park.
In the afternoon, the President of the Republic participated in the Forest Week's opening conference ''With common efforts - viribus unitis'', which took place in the assembly hall of the Kilingi-Nõmme Gymnasium, and listened to a concert of the winners of the poetry and music contest ''The most beautiful forest song''.
