The President of the Republic met with the representatives of the Estonian Employers' Confederation
13.04.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the leaders of the Estonian Employers' Confederation Council. The meeting addressed the possibilities to solve the problems of labour market, among which the reform of vocational education was highlighted.

The President of the Republic noted that it was impossible to build up Estonian economy on the import of foreign workers; first of all we have to focus on enhancement of employment and improvement of technology, and training of necessary specialists.

The employers stressed that for development of vocational education it was essential to adopt already completed development plan as soon as possible and to carry on with the process of merging vocational schools pursuant to the development plan of the vocational schools network for 2005-2008.

The Head of State and the representatives of employers shared a common viewpoint that during certain periods the use of foreign specialists on Estonian labour market presented a possibility to alleviate the shortage of qualified labour force, but the main attention should be focused on offering better living conditions and possibilities of work for the Estonian people in their homeland. It is necessary to carry forward the educational reform, and first of all to improve the system of vocational education.

President Rüütel made a proposition to the representatives of the Estonian Employers' Confederation to have such meetings also in future in order to look for solutions to their problems.
