The President of the Republic nominated the candidate for Prime Minister

President Arnold Rüütel tonight at Kadriorg met with Andrus Ansip, the Chairman of the Reform Party, Edgar Savisaar, the Chairman of the Centrist Party, and Villu Reiljan, the Chairman of the Estonian People's Union.

According to the Head of State, he had by now consulted with the leaders of all political parties elected to the Riigikogu who, among other things, had presented him their visions of Estonia's main development directions and of the future government coalition. The President expressed hope that the new government coalition, which would be formed on the basis of the Reform Party, the Centrist Party and the Estonian People's Union, would guarantee regionally and socially balanced and sustainable development for Estonia.

"We face an urgent need to value more the people of Estonia. This would be a complex task and considering our worrisome demographic situation, it gains even more actuality. We have to find additional possibilities to enhance the health of people and make good education accessible to everyone. Our children need more care and consideration than ever," the President of the Republic said.

President Rüütel signed the resolution designating Andrus Ansip the candidate for Prime Minister and assigned him the task of forming the new Government of the Republic. Andrus Ansip thanked the Head of State for his confidence.
