The President of the Republic met with representatives of Setumaa

President Arnold Rüütel at Kadriorg met with representatives of SetumaaPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with representatives of Setumaa. The Setu delegation included among the others Ilmar Vananurm, a member of the Council of Elders of Seto Congress and the editor of the newspaper Setomaa, Tiit Niilo, the chairman of the Riigikogu's Petserimaa support group. In the course of the meeting, a public address of the people of Petserimaa with all the signatures that had been given in the support of the address was handed over to the President of the Republic.

The meeting addressed the issues of the Estonian-Russian border treaty. The Head of the State said that the border treaty took into account the political realities and already the previous governments had made their decision in that respect. The head of the State will forward the public address to the Government of the Republic. President Rüütel stressed the necessity to support the cultural and economic development of the region and emphasised the importance of the inclusion of Setomaa cultural traditions to the register of "Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO.
