18.03.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today was present at the signing of the Protocol of Intentions to cooperate in promotion of physical exercising in Lääne-Viru County, which took place at Rakvere Sports Hall.

In his greeting address, the President of the Republic gave recognition to the initiative launched by the Estonian Olympic Committee to mobilize the people, resources, ideas, organisations and institutions on the county level in order to invigorate the habit of exercising and recreational sports.

President Rüütel noted that the United Nations Organisation had announced the current year a Year for Sports and Physical Education. "This shows that the World Organisation highly values the social role of sports and physical education in the society, and hopes that through physical exercising and sports it would be possible to promote education and health, maintain peace and enhance the quality of life for the people," the Head of the State said.

The President of the Republic stated that though the Estonians were taken as sports loving nation, nevertheless, the facts show that less than one third of people living in Estonia was actively and regularly going in for physical exercising, and called on decision makers, opinion leaders, politicians, cultural activists and businessmen to support the sporty and healthy life style through setting a good personal example.

"I welcome any form and way and place of going in for sports, but I especially appreciate walking and exercising outdoors, in the nature. Unlike to bosh water centres and expensive ice halls, this is an affordable way to go in for sports, and as an added value to a good feeling and cheerful mind we can enjoy sensuous pleasure from the beauty of Estonian nature," president Rüütel said.

Following the signing of the Cooperation Protocol, president Rüütel joined the other participants in the 5-kilometer Nordic pole walking on Rakvere fitness sports trail.

The cooperation agreement, named the Protocol of Intentions, was signed by the Estonian Olympic Committee, the Lääne-Viru County Government, the Association of Local Governments of Lääne-Viru County, the Lääne Virumaa Sports Association, the Enterpreneurs' Club Wesenberg, the weekly newspaper "Eesti Spordileht", the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Environment.

This year, on January 7, a similar cooperation agreement on sports was signed in the Põlva County.
