The President of the Republic attended the thank-you-event ''The Deed of the Year 2004''The President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today at the Kadriorg Art Museum attended the thank-you-event of the Estonian Union of Persons with Mobility Impairment ''The Deed of the Year 2004''.

In his greeting address, President Rüütel noted that it was always good to see optimistic and enterprising people thanks to whom also our society is starting to become aware of disabled people's needs.

''Your common goal to achieve that persons with mobility impairment could have opportunities of self-realisation equal to those that non-disabled people have, is commendable. You do not have to do anything extraordinary for this, provided that the society has the main thing - good will,'' the Head of State said. President Rüütel stressed that first of all it was important to guarantee for people with disabilities maximum accessibility both in physical and virtual environment, and to remove any barriers to education, employment and health services.

''In 2002, the European Congress on People with Disabilities called upon the EU Member States to make steps towards treating people with disabilities not as objects of social welfare, but as equal members of society. Estonia, being a member of the EU, has the same task,'' President Rüütel said.

The President of the Republic wished the Estonian Union of Persons with Mobility Impairment strength and optimism, and to all those present happiness and health.
