President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today attended a divine service in the Tallinn Cathedral held to consecrate Rev. Andres Põder as the new archbishop of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church. After the consecration service, the presidential couple participated in the reception held in the House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads.

Yesterday evening, the President of the Republic received at Kadriorg residence the primates from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States of America, Iceland and Russia, who are participating at the consecration. On this occasion the head of state said that the consecration of the new archbishop is an important event not only in the church life, but also for the whole Estonian society, as the EELC enjoys high authority. ''I would like to express my deepest thanks to Archbishop Jaan Kiivit for the work he has done as the primate, being a guardian of human values, spiritual life and ethical convictions. I wish Archbishop elect Andres Põder, who will be consecrated tomorrow, success and fortitude in strengthening the role of church and promoting the value of spiritual world and intellectual life. I would like to thank honourable high guests for their presence at tomorrow's consecration, as it will add international weight to that important for us day,'' President Rüütel said yesterday in his greeting to the guests of honour who had arrived to attend the consecration of the new archbishop of the EELC.
