In connection with today announced decision of the President of the Republic of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga to accept the invitation of Vladimir Putin to participate in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union in World War II on May 9 in Moscow, the President of the Republic Arnold Rüütel said:
"The Baltic states are sovereign states and we have to respect the decision of the Head of Latvian state. As the Head of Estonian state, I have not yet made a final decision on possible visit to Moscow in May. Estonia will form her final decision in this matter at a later date."
"Naturally, the decision of the Latvian president will not interfere with the cooperation between the Baltic states that will continue unabated at all levels. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have many common discussion topics, and we look to the future together," President Rüütel said.
