The President of the Republic sent a message of condolences in connection with the tsunami

President Arnold Rüütel in his letter to the President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen, the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of Norway Harald V, the Queen of Denmark Margarethe II and the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Köhler on behalf of himself and the people of Estonia extended deepest condolences to the relatives of the victims and to all those who have suffered from the disastrous tsunami hitting the countries of Southeast Asia on the morning of December 26.

The message of condolences sent to the heads of state runs: "I was deeply saddened by the news of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean near Sumatra, as a consequence of which many of your countrymen lost their lives. On behalf of the people of Estonia and myself I express our deepest condolences to you and your people." The President of the Republic wished the heads of state and the people of the countries who had suffered from the catastrophe strength to recover from that frightful tragedy and pointed out that what had happened was a shock for all of us, writing in his letter of condolences: "Our thoughts are with you in your mourning."
