The President of the Republic met with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss various foreign policy related issues.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, informed the President of the Republic of the debate about Estonian foreign policy in the Riigikogu on December 7 and the recent foreign visits of the Committee. The meeting addressed at greater length regional cooperation issues within the framework of the European Union, primarily focusing on the Baltic cooperation. Estonia is going to hold the presidency of several Baltic cooperation bodies in 2005.

The President of the Republic informed the Foreign Affairs Committee about the topics dealt at his recent foreign visits. Also the invitation sent to the Head of the State to visit Moscow in May 2005 was discussed. Both, President Rüütel and the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee stressed that the final decision would be made in close cooperation with the three Baltic states. The Chairman of the Committee, Marko Mihkelson, made a suggestion that the political parties would take a firm position concerning the visit to Moscow.

The meeting agreed unanimously that regular discussions and exchange of information between the Head of the State and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu would contribute substantially to the success of Estonian foreign policy.
