The President of the Republic attended the Estonian Rural Sports Association's Year-End event
11.12.2004

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today attended the year-end festive event of the Estonian Rural Sports Association "JÕUD" at Pärnu Concert House.

In his greeting address President Rüütel called special attention to sportsmen whose achievements do not measure up to Olympic Medals, but whose attitude towards life is exemplary. "Sport for fitness has to fulfil a social role which is different from top sport's role, but nevertheless not less important. Not everyone is capable to reach top-level, but we all need some physical load. We are aware of public health problems, but we also know that moderate exercising is a remedy for many ills," the Head of the State said.

The President of the Republic remarked that lighted skiing and jogging tracks could be built at relatively low cost, it needs good initiators and cooperation between local authorities and enthusiasts.

President Rüütel recognized the initiative of the Estonian Olympic Committee to develop sports in counties according to a coordinated action plan. "County governments, the Association of Local Governments, the Rural Sports Association "Jõud" and other sports promoting associations can make their contribution to that. This could be a kind of county level public understanding agreement on sports and physical hobbies," the President of the Republic added.

The Head of the State thanked those who keep sporting spirit of both rural and urban population high and wished a happy end of the year and many achievements in New Year.
