The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Portugal

President Arnold Rüütel received the credentials of the Ambassador of Portugal Joćo Manuel da Cruz da Silva LeitćoPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the credentials of the Ambassador of Portugal Joćo Manuel da Cruz da Silva Leitćo.

In the words of the President of the Republic, Estonian-Portuguese relations are characterised by regular and substantial political dialogue and bilateral economic cooperation, which is showing an ever-increasing trend. ''We see a broad perspective for further development. Therefore, we are making active efforts to introduce Estonia more comprehensively to Portugal and to enhance already existing contacts'', the Head of the State added.

President Rüütel stated that both countries are striving for stable and sustainable development and good relations with our neighbours. ''The fight against international terrorism presents new challenges to us, and a wish to contribute to ensuring peace and security in Europe and in the rest of the world has become a new attitude in life. Our two countries share those conceptions and it has brought our nations closer to each other,'' the President of the Republic said.

The Head of the Estonian state and the Ambassador of Portugal noted that the partnership in the European Union and NATO offers more possibilities to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in the area of economy as well as in the area of culture.
