The Heads of the Baltic states met in Vilnius. Left: Valdas Adamkus, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Arnold Rüütel.Today, in the morning the Presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had a working meeting in Vilnius, which was the first joint meeting after the three countries joined the European Union and NATO.

The meeting addressed trilateral relations of the Baltic states, the EU Neighbourhood Policy and joint cooperation with the Nordic countries and the countries of Southern Caucasus. The discussion on cooperation between the three Baltic states focused on development of infrastructures, including the building of electricity and gas networks in order to ensure guaranteed reliability of supply and variety of suppliers. The Presidents noted the importance of joint efforts to facilitate stable and democratic development in the region of Southern Caucasus through bilateral as well as multilateral cooperation.

The topic of a further enlargement of the European Union, including the issue of starting accession negotiations with Turkey, which is on the agenda of the next EU Summit, was also discussed.

At the end of the meeting, the Baltic Heads of State held a joint press conference and after that the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus left for Kiev being invited as the closest neighbour by the Ukrainian President at Office Leonid Kuchma to facilitate the stabilisation of the situation evoked by the Presidential elections.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas hosted a lunch in honour of the President of Estonia Arnold Rüütel and the President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

After lunch the Baltic Heads of State took part in the foundation ceremony of the Baltic Basketball League at Vilnius Siemens Arena.

In the afternoon President Rüütel met with Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas.

The President of the Republic will arrive back to Estonia today late at night.
