The President of the Republic thanked the former Head of the Delegation of the European Commission

The Head of the Delegation of the European Commission, Ambassador John Kjaer and president Arnold RüütelThe Head of the Delegation of the European Commission, Ambassador John Kjaer today at Kadriorg paid a farewell call on President Arnold Rüütel who thanked the Ambassador for his notable contribution to Estonia's accession to the European Union.

The President of the Republic noted that John Kjaer's stay in Estonia coincided with the time when Estonia was acquiring experience of working in the European Union structures in order to be actively involved in making decisions, which would change the future of Estonia. The Head of the Estonian State emphasised the Ambassador's ability to explain the necessity of the EU accession to the people of Estonia. President Rüütel also recognised the work of the European Commission's representation in the implementation of the projects financed from the European Structural Funds.

Ambassador Kjaer said that considering the history, size and geographic location of Estonia, he believed that from the viewpoint of Estonia's sovereignty and security the EU accession was a right decision. ''Looking into future, it is important that Estonia is in the European Union. The European Union is not a static body, it is constantly changing and developing'', added Ambassador Kjaer.

In recognition of John Kjaer's services, President Rüütel conferred on him the 1st Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana.
