The President of the Republic opened an international conference "Youth in the Labour Market"
08.11.2004

President Arnold Rüütel today at the Tallinn University of Technology opened an international conference "Changing Chairs - Youth in the Labour Market".

The President of the Republic noted that today primarily structural unemployment is typical for Estonia, where unbalance of labour demand and supply is a result of disparity between training, skills, prior work experience and fast-changing labour market's requirements. "Especially regretful is the unemployment among youth, exceeding from time to time twice the average unemployment rate in Estonia. Every fifth young person does not find a job," recognized the Head of State.

President Rüütel said that in recent years the Government and educational institutions of Estonia have made serious efforts to enhance the level of teaching and research work. Following a time-befitting trend the universities become closer to enterprises and offer possibilities of new applicable solutions. All this would create new prospects also to future students and young specialists", said the President of the Republic.

The Head of State said that as long as knowledge and technology are becoming ever more important factors from the viewpoint of competitiveness, also the education and vocational qualifications are gaining significance and development of knowledge based economy, which is one of the national priorities in Estonia, is a big challenge to young people but also to schools and educational policy makers.

"A good education is one of the most essential prerequisites for being successful in the labour market. But without good health it is also difficult to be successful. An individual and the society both benefit from good education and good health. Therefore I call on you to take care of both - your body and your mind", added the President of the Republic and wished to the participants of the conference fruitful exchange of thoughts and success in the labour market.
