The president of the Republic opened a rural life forum
28.10.2004

President Arnold Rüütel opened today the rural life forum "30 000 new jobs" in the assembly hall of the Estonian Agricultural University in Tartu . The forum was organised by the Public Understanding Foundation and the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce.

The President of the Republic in his opening speech noted that the creation of new jobs in rural districts is not only necessary but it is also something which has been anticipated and is very much in concord with the goals of a balanced regional and economic development. The head of the state said: "It is not only a socio-economic goal the fulfilment of which would decrease the number of people who have subsistence difficulties and would help to raise the income of people as well as of the state. This goal is directly linked also with the lifestyle and identity of Estonians".

President Rüütel pointed out that the goal of agriculture to provide high quality food to people and raw material to local industry is becoming more and more valued, therefore a special status of agriculture as a strategic field of production will persist and agricultural production, first of all its diversification, offers opportunities for enhancement of employment situation.

"Beside a clear future vision the implementation of new innovative ideas needs also consensus. Such consensus about the future of rural life has been achieved in our society. A sign of this is the fact that agriculture and rural life as a whole are treated cohesively", said the President of the Republic.
