The President of the Republic attended the anniversary ceremony of Tallinn Pedagogical University

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today attended the 85th anniversary ceremony of Tallinn Pedagogical University.

President Rüütel in his address noted that the Estonian university through ages had been an upholder of our national sciences, ideals, language and culture. "The Pedagogical University is a research and development centre for both social sciences and humanities. In addition, state officials and leaders of citizens' associations acquire modern education here. Thus we can say that the Pedagogical University bears great responsibility for the future of our people, country and culture," said the Head of State.

Congratulating those awarded the degree of PhD and new honorary doctors of the Pedagogical University, President Rüütel said that by training this kind of intellectuals, whose knowledge and skills ensured Estonia's sustainable development, the university in every respect had fulfilled its mission to increase the intellectual capital of Estonian society. The President of the Republic wished the whole faculty of the university brilliant ideas and innovative applications.

At the anniversary ceremony of Tallinn Pedagogical University, an honorary doctorate was conferred on Doctor of History Prof. Olavi Arens from Armstrong Atlantic University, Prof. Juhani Hytönen from Helsinki University and Prof. Aino Sallinen from Jyväskylä University. On top of that, the following 14 scientists were awarded the PhD degree: Argo Moor, Andres Kratovitš, Heli Tooman, Anne Valmas, Katrin Niglas, Anna Gubergrits, Inna Järva, Monika Pullerits, Marju Medar, Krista Loogma, Maia Muldma, Kerri Kotta, Tiiu Kuurme ja Iivi Zajedova.
