The President of the Republic met with the President of Cyprus

President Rüütel met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos PapadopoulosThe President of the Republic today at Kadriorg met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, who arrived in Estonia for an official visit.

At the official welcoming ceremony the national anthems of Cyprus and Estonia were played. The welcoming ceremony was followed by a tete-a-tete meeting between the Presidents and, thereafter, by a meeting together with delegations. The meeting addressed opportunities to encourage future cooperation between Estonia and Cyprus. The Presidents also held a joint press conference.

President Rüütel at the meeting stressed opportunities for promoting relations in the field of culture, tourism and, likewise, information technology in order to build up a knowledge-based society.

President Papadopoulos at the meeting gave an overview of the situation on the Island of Cyprus. He also noted that small countries, in order to defend their interests, had to strengthen mutual cooperation and to shape common positions within the framework of the European Union.

In the afternoon, the Presidents will visit the Port of Tallinn. This evening, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will host a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Cyprus.
