The President of the Republic visited the Town of Druskininkai
06.10.2004

President Arnold Rüütel on his state visit to the Republic of Lithuania today spent the day in the Town of Druskininkai where he first met with Mayor Ričardas Malinauskas. The Mayor gave to the Estonian delegation an overview of Druskininkai's history ranging from a Tsarist Russian spa providing mineral water and mud treatment to a first-class recreational centre in today's Europe.

The Estonian Head of State made a tour of the town lying in the midst of forests bordering the river Neman and called at the Health Centre of Druskininkai, where significant investments are to be made in the near future. The President of the Republic also visited the Archive of Tax Declarations of the Lithuanian State Tax Inspection, which had recently moved into a modern house built after the Town of Druskininkai had won the relevant competition.

President Rüütel acknowledged the energetic work done by Mayor Malinauskas, which over the last years had made the town develop rapidly and, at the same time, in a balanced manner.

Over the past few years the unemployment rate in Druskininkai has fallen by more than half and there is a lot of service establishments under construction that in the near future will offer health and recreational services on a very broad scale, whereas Lithuanian investors have contributed to that most.

The President of the Republic also visited cultural monuments in the Village of Liškiava and met with the County Governor of Alytus, Raimundas Markauskas. At Liškiava, there are remnants of a fortress of Lithuanian Grand Dukes built in the 15th century and a church that from the 17th to the 19th century was a part of a Dominican monastery complex but today is functioning as a cultural centre. Also the family of painter and composer M. K. Čiurlionis originating in this region had close ties to this church

The President of the Republic will arrive back in Estonia late this evening.
