PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to make a state visit to the Republic of Lithuania

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel on Monday, October 4, will embark on a state visit to the Republic of Lithuania.

During the visit, Estonian-Lithuanian relations both at the bilateral and the Baltic States' level, and within EU and NATO cooperation framework will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to promoting economic cooperation. On top of that, the issues of the EU neighbourhood policy, air policing and security policy will be addressed.

On Monday, October 4, President Rüütel will meet with the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, and the Deputy Speaker of the Lithuanian Saeima, Česlovas Juršenas.

The President of the Republic is going to lay a wreath at the Cemetary of Antakalnis to commemorate those who died for regaining the Lithuanian independence, and to visit the University of Vilnius, where he will meet with the University's Rector, Benediktas Juodka, and together with Tiina Kattel, Estonian Language Lector at the University of Vilnius, open an Estonian language room.

The President of the Republic of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, and Mrs. Alma Adamkiene will host a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.

On Tuesday, October 5, the Estonian Head of State is scheduled to meet with the Chairman of the Lithuanian Saeima, Arturas Paulauskas. On the same day, president Rüütel will open an Estonian-Lithuanian business seminar and an exhibition of sculptures by Tarmo Kangro. In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will call at the first airbase of the Lithuanian Air Force, where also the NATO aircrafts policing the Baltic airspace are stationed.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, Algirdas Brazauskas, will host a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.

On Wednesday, October 6, President Rüütel is going to meet with Mayor of Druskininkai Ričardas Malinauskas. On the same day, the Estonian Head of State will call at the Health Centre of Druskininkai and a Dominican monastery at Liškiava.

The official delegation accompanying the President of the Republic includes among others the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Lithuania, Andres Tropp, the Commander of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, the Minister of the Environment, Villu Reiljan, the Minister of Education and Research, Toivo Maimets, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Margus Leivo, the Chairman of the Riigikogu's Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, the Member of the Riigikogu, Toomas Alatalu, and the County Governor of Viljandi, Kalle Küttis. The Head of State on his visit will be accompanied also by a 22-member business delegation headed by the Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Toomas Luman.

The President of the Republic will arrive back in Estonia on Wednesday, October 6.
