27.09.2004

President Arnold Rüütel at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28, in Tallinn will open an Estonian-French joint workshop entitled "Opportunities of Local Government in the European Union".

The workshop initiated by the President's Roundtable on Local Government and Regional Development and the Commission on Development of Public Administration and Local Government of the President's Academic Council, in which also the French Embassy will participate, is going to take place on September 28-29 in Tallinn, in the conference hall on the ground floor of the building at Sütiste tee 21. The President of the Republic and the French Ambassador to Estonia, Chantal de Bourmont, will speak at the workshop. The workshop's roundtables are going to feature, among others, Professor Marie-Luce Pavia from the University of Montpellier and Director for International Cooperation of DATAR Jean-Claude Ebel. From the Estonian side, Minister of Finance Taavi Veskimägi, Minister of Regional Affairs Jaan Õunapuu, Mayor of Kuressaare, Chairman of the Association of Estonian Cities Jaanus Tamkivi and others will make presentations.

The initiator of the workshop, the President's Roundtable on Local Government and Regional Development, deems it essential that, in order to deepen the cooperation between the state and local government in exploiting opportunities given by the EU and in ensuring balanced development of Estonia's local governments, challenges and opportunities for local government be analysed and assessed in the course of joint discussions. The organizers also would like to acquaint workshop participants with the pertinent experience of the EU Member States.
