| Press Releases | | | The President of the Republic Sent a Letter of Endorsement to a Holocaust Memorial Service in Berlin26.09.2004
President Rüütel sent a letter of endorsement to a ceremony celebrating the installation of a Commemorative Mural for the Victims of Holocaust in the Vaterunser Church in Berlin, which took place today.
The President of the Republic in his letter of endorsement on behalf of the people of Estonia paid homage to all those who in the Second World War suffered a tragic fate and whose lives were snuffed out cruelly.
The letter runs as follows: "Mutual respect and esteem may be simple words but they are not just words, they have a very deep meaning.
They mean that we have the right to choose our paths and to arrange our lives on our own. The Second World War was such a part of history, where no attention whatsoever was paid to the meaning of these words. Perhaps just now is the right time to keep reminding each other that tolerance is inseparable from humanity. The wounds left in the human soul by war heal slowly.
In today's world we too often tend to use big words and new complicated notions. Therefore, talks about values, respect and mutual esteem sometimes may seem to be trivial and ordinary. And still - good and evil, right and wrong do and will exist in the world. It is our duty to explain the true meaning of these words and do it without distorting the truth.
Human life is sacred and we hold it in the highest esteem. The people of Estonia bow their heads together with you remembering the victims of intolerance and hatred between peoples."
