The President of the Republic met with the Foreign Minister of Turkey

President Rüütel met with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah GülPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül.

The meeting addressed the Turkish-Estonian relationship. The parties noted that Estonia and Turkey enjoyed very good and supportive relations. The President of the Republic emphasized that Estonia was desirous of promoting with Turkey defence as well as economic and cultural cooperation.

At the meeting, also Turkey's prospects of opening accession talks with the European Union were under discussion. According to the President of the Republic, Estonia welcomed Turkey's extensive political and economic reforms. "Estonia supports Turkey's accession to the European Union. We are willing to share with you experience in the fields where we have similar problems," President Rüütel assured.

The Turkish Foreign Minister thanked President Rüütel for his unambiguous support for Turkey's EU membership. According to the Foreign Minister, Turkey was interested in expanding cooperation with Estonia and the rest of the Baltic States.

At the end of the meeting, views were exchanged also on the issues connected with Transcaucasus.
