01.09.2004

President Rüütel on the occasion of today's Knowledge Day visited the Basic School of Ilmatsalu where he gave all first graders a primer as a present and wished pupils success in acquiring knowledge.

The President of the Republic wished the teachers and pupils of Ilmatsalu Basic School that they were like a strong family holding together and supporting each other.

President Rüütel met with Headmistress Maie Leinus and Headteacher Maie Sokk of the school as well as with Mayor Rein Kokk and Council Chairman Aavo Mölder of the Rural Municipality of Tähtvere.

The President of the Republic next delivered an address at the opening convocation at the Estonian Agricultural University and met with the Rector of the Academy, Alar Karis.

President Rüütel in his address noted that good education benefited both those having it and the entire society, whereas agricultural education helped maintain and hold in high esteem our bond with nature indispensable to human existence.

"Thus, the riches of Estonia have two main sources: man and nature. There is no doubt that a well-educated nation is rich for it can, on top of everything else, also manage wisely natural resources. Yet, without it, it would be impossible to speak about any sustainable development of natural environment or human society," the President of the Republic said.
