PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to make a working visit to Finland
31.08.2004

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel on Friday, September 3, will embark on a working visit to the Republic of Finland.

According to the Head of State, the visit would focus first of all on the issues of sustainable way of life and environmental protection. "I believe that awareness of Finland's extensive and diversified experience in this field should be promoted more widely in Estonia. We can get from our northern neighbours good ideas for our doings at home. On the other hand, in next years the importance of our skills to both preserve Estonia's unique nature and to present it in the European context will continue growing steadily," President Rüütel said.

On Friday, President Rüütel in Helsinki will meet with the President of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen. Thereafter, the President of the Republic will travel to Rovaniemi, where he is scheduled to meet the Governor of the Province of Lapland, Hannele Pokka. President Rüütel is also going to familiarize himself with activities of the Environment Agency of Lapland and the NGO "Pidä Lappi Siistinä" (Keep Lapland Tidy). On top of that, the President of the Republic will visit the enterprise Lappset Group Oy manufacturing park and street furniture and playground equipment exported into around 40 countries.

During his visit, the Estonian Head of State will acquaint himself also with the City of Rovaniemi, the Ylläs Ecotourism Centre in the Municipality of Kolari and the Art Gallery of Reijo Raekallio at Pöntsö in the Municipality of Kittilä. In addition to that, the President of the Republic is going to visit the company Lassila & Tikanoja Oy that is the first among the Finnish conservation-related enterprises listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

The President of the Republic on his visit is accompanied by the Minister of the Environment, Villu Reiljan. The Head of State will return to Estonia on Sunday, September 5.

President Arnold Rüütel already for several decades has been actively engaged in environmental protection. He has headed the Estonian Society for Nature Conservation promoting nature conservation and education, and the movement "Hoia Eesti Merd" (Keep the Estonian Sea Tidy) engaged in cleaning up the Estonian coastline and in restoring small harbours. As President of the Estonian national organisation of the Green Cross International, he has contributed to the efforts to bequeath to our posterity a tidy and nature-friendly Estonia.
