The President of the Republic attended the celebration of the 220th anniversary of the Town of Võru21.08.2004
President Rüütel today met with Mayor of Võru Ando Hagel and attended the celebration of the 220th anniversary of the Town of Võru.
The President of the Republic attended a reception on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of Võru held by Mayor of Võru Ando Hagel and Chairman of the Town Council of Võru Tõnu Anton in the garden of Võru's Cultural Centre "Kannel".
President Rüütel in his welcoming address stressed that although already 220 years for a town was a very respectable age, it was generally known that the settlement here dated back no less than five thousand years. The President of the Republic highlighted the importance of Võru as an educational and cultural centre, which was proven among other things by the circumstance that Kreutzwald had created the Estonian national epos at this very place.
