The President of the Republic thanked the Ambassador of Portugal

The Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic, Filipe Augusto Guterres, today at Kadriorg paid a farewell call on President Arnold Rüütel who thanked the Ambassador for his contribution to promoting cooperation between Estonia and Portugal.

The President of the Republic congratulated Portugal on Prime Minister Barroso's election to the high office of the President of the European Commission. President Rüütel noted that Estonia and Portugal enjoyed good bilateral relations which thanks to recent high-level visits had become still closer.

Ambassador Guterres expressed his delight that Estonia had become a Member of the European Union and NATO, and congratulated Estonia on Siim Kallas having become Vice President of the European Commission and Toomas Hendrik Ilves Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.
