Heinrich Mark dies

It is with deep regret that the Office of the President of the Republic announces the death today in Stockholm of Heinrich Mark, former Prime Minister with Presidential Powers. Heinrich Mark headed the Government of the Republic of Estonia in Exile in the years 1990-1992.

Heinrich Mark was born in the Rural Municipality of Krootuse, Võrumaa, on the 1st of October 1911. He studied law at the University of Tartu and, thereafter, worked as a teacher and a lawyer. In 1940, he registered as a candidate to run against the Estonian Working People's Union in the parliamentary elections but was crossed off the list of candidates by occupation authorities. In 1943, he fled to Finland and, one year later, settled down in Sweden.

Heinrich Mark was active in many exile organisations. Over several decades, being Chairman of the Estonian Committee's Board of Education, later on Director of the Bureau and Deputy Chairman of the Committee, from 1975 to 1982 Chairman and from 1982 Honorary Chairman, made a great contribution to the activities of this organisation. In 1951-1979, Heinrich Mark was Secretary General of the Estonian National Council.

In the Estonian Exile Government, Heinrich Mark 1953-1971 was State Secretary, 1971-1990 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of War, and 1990-1992 Prime Minister with Presidential Powers. In October 1992, Heinrich Mark before the Riigikogu devolved his powers to Lennart Meri who had been elected President of the Republic.

Many years of fruitful activities earned Heinrich Mark several awards including Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the Tartu University, Honorary Membership of the Estonian Literary Society and the 2nd Class Order of the National Coat of Arms of the Republic of Estonia.
