The President of the Republic attended the unveiling of Laidoner's Monument
22.06.2004

President Arnold Rüütel today attended the unveiling of an equestrian statue of General Johan Laidoner at Viljandi.

According to the President of the Republic, it was symbolic in every respect that the monument to General Laidoner was unveiled just before the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Võnnu. "With his action, authority and example, Commander-in-Chief Johan Laidoner achieved what at first sight seemed impossible. He was able to instil belief not only in our army, but also in the whole of Estonia. The outcome was a victory, which ensured our people our own state," President Rüütel said.

The equestrian statue of General Johan Laidoner unveiled today in the Castle Hill Park of Viljandi is Estonia's first equestrian statue dedicated to a historical person. Also the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence, the Commander of Defence Forces, the Mayor of Viljandi, the Honorary Chairman and the Chairman of General Johan Laidoner's Society attended the opening ceremony. The monument was consecrated by Archbishop of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church Jaan Kiivit. The monument to the legendary Commander-in Chief during Estonia's War of Independence initiated by General Johan Laidoner's Society and financed through a national fundraising campaign stands for Estonia's gratitude to all those who took part in the War of Independence. The author of the equestrian statue is sculptor Terje Ojaver.
