21.06.2004

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel in the Rose Garden of Kadriorg received the best university and college graduates of EstoniaPresident Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today in the Rose Garden of Kadriorg received the best university and college graduates of Estonia. 50 graduates from 24 universities and colleges had been invited to the reception.

President Rüütel in his address noted that without youthfully bold, even risky ideas quite many of the discoveries and events having changed the world hadn't taken place at all. "Young intellectuals have directed the development of both science and culture and nations. The idea of Estonian statehood, too, came from young intellectuals. They also gave our people the blue-black-white flag, the 120th anniversary of which we recently celebrated," the President of the Republic said.

The graduates were greeted by Minister of Education and Research Toivo Maimets in whose words the Minister of Education each year had at least two beautiful days - Reception of the President of the Republic for Best Graduates and the 24th of February, when Estonia's best scientists and cultural figures are honoured. Minister Maimets expressed his hope that he could meet the same persons at an award ceremony on February 24 as soon as possible.

Katri Paas from the Faculty of Law at the Tartu University, who replied with a speech on behalf of the graduates, stressed that the most important thing was an ability to shape one's views - there was certainly no need to reinvent the bicycle but one had to seek possibilities to improve the construction of the existing bicycle.

The Trumpet Ensemble of Aavo Ots' Music Studio played music at the reception.
